Sometimes, you hear about something so strange that it’s hard to believe. And what happened to one Florida husband and wife is one of those instances that has me saying “wtf?!”
I bet that MaryLou Ward and her husband won’t ever go to the bathroom during a thunderstorm for the rest of their lives, after what happened at their home in Port Charlotte, Florida on Sunday.
Cleaning Up the Mess After….a Toilet Explosion?
This Florida couple is left cleaning up quite a mess in their Gulf Cove home after the toilet in their master bathroom exploded during a thunderstorm. Yes, you read that correctly.
According to MaryLou, they were in bed with their three dogs listening to the rain and thunder outside, when they were left terrified by a mysterious blast from inside the home. She says that it was the loudest sound she has ever heard. It was so violent, in fact, that she feared her house was on fire.
“We got out of bed and came over here, and the toilet was laying on the floor,” MaryLou said during an interview after the incident had occurred.
Local Plumbing Company Helping Clean Up the Mess
A local plumbing company called A-1 Affordable Plumbing is who is helping MaryLou and her husband clean up the mess. According to them, lighting struck near the home’s septic tank.
Methane, which is a flammable gas, occurs in small quantities in both human flatulence and waste. Methane was able to build up inside of the Wards’ septic tank. That methane was ignited by the lightning strike, which is what caused the bomb-like explosion that traveled through their plumbing and eventually exploded the toilet in their master bathroom.
Unfortunately, the entire plumbing system was ruined after the ignited methane gas traveled through the pipes. It also left plenty of burnt grass around the septic tank in the yard.
Odds of Lightning Striking a Septic Tank is Rare
It sounds incredibly terrifying, but you don’t necessarily have to avoid the bathroom during a storm if you really need to go. Chances are, the toilet won’t explode while you are in there. A-1 Affordable Plumbing said that this incident is just as rare as a person getting struck by lightning.
